Lessons from a Job Transition After Receiving My Five-Year Trophy

In 2009, I received my 5-year trophy from the company I was working for.

I had a guaranteed raise and bonus every year, excellent benefits, and was having a record year. My team hit its revenue goal by Labor Day. Life felt solid.

That same day, my coworker and I won the company-wide corn hole tournament.

A few hours later, I was told I needed to transition my team and clients away by the end of the year.

That moment changed everything for me.

I had already seriously looked at franchising a couple of years earlier and worked with a franchise consultant. At the time, I decided the timing wasn’t right and chose to stay focused on what I believed was a long-term career.

Looking back, the real lesson wasn’t about that particular company. It was about control.

No matter how well you’re performing or how secure things feel, someone else still holds the decision about whether your job continues.

Business ownership isn’t risk-free. But it is one of the few paths where you get a real say in your own future.

If you’re ready to explore what business ownership could look like for you, feel free to reach out. My services are completely free to candidates.
